📢✒️"Stability, Foundations & Flourishing: The Basic Income for Artists in Ireland" Article Published in Kolaj Magazine #43✒️📢

April 9, 2026 Anthony D Kelly

📢✒️"Stability, Foundations & Flourishing: The Basic Income for Artists in Ireland"✒️📢
Article Published in Kolaj Magazine #43.

I am proud to announce that my article entitled “Stability, Foundations & Flourishing: The Basic Income for Artists in Ireland” will feature in the upcoming issue of Kolaj Magazine #43. In this article I reflect on my personal experiences and the results of the incredible pilot program and the triumphal work carried out by the National Campaign for the Arts in Ireland to get this program onto a permanent footing. I also reflect on the harrowing and critical research supplied by the our colleagues and friends who took part in the pilot program control group, and who’s sacrifices have provided us with an accurate and lamentable portrait of the precarity faced by creatives without a program like this.

Kolaj Magazine exists to report on the International Collage Community and how collage is making its way into the world.

Kolaj Magazine Issue #43 also features:
✂️Clive Knights is on the cover of Kolaj 43. His essay, “The Fluctuation of Likeness” speaks to the Necessity of Misrecognition. He writes, “Art reveals a part of something that perpetually extends beyond the edges of our reach, where nevertheless, the very act of reaching imparts an unsubstitutable, somewhat melancholic joy (though oddly reassuring) in the impossibility of the puzzle ever being completed.”
✂️In “Everything a Little Richer”, Michael Joshua Rowin interviews photomontagist Mark Rappaport about the way he thinks about images, art, and cinema.
✂️Anthony Michael Ryder considers the relationship of collage and trauma in “A Communion of Pain”.
✂️Emily Denlinger writes about taking her “Gain of Function” project to Carnival in New Orleans. “Most of my personal experience with collective effervescence has happened during political rallies. Being on site during Carnival allowed me to broaden my experience with collective effervescence and participate in the folklore, customs and rituals surrounding these events.”

✂️A whole host of other writings and images from international collage artists doing incredible things.

✒️✂️ New Publication- Gain of Function: New Mutations/Old Traditions/Collective Effervescence✂️✒️

I was delighted to have the opportunity to engage with this project by Emily Denlinger at Kolaj Fest 2025 back in June. Taking inspiration from the history of piracy on the West Coast of Ireland, I created a character to suit. I am really excited to see this new publication from the Kolaj Institute and find my piratical miscreant amongst its pages.. I am really excited to see this new publication from the Kolaj Institute and find my piratical miscreant amongst its pages.
Read more about Emily’s ongoing Gain of Function/ New Mutation project below.

”Gain of Function: New Mutations/Old Traditions/Collective Effervescence
is a project led by Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA-based artist Emily Denlinger that speaks to the role of art, ritual, and resilience. Building on her own work, Denlinger engaged with thirty-nine artists at the 2025 edition of Kolaj Fest New Orleans to make locative collage photographs in an artist-created landscape inspired by global masking traditions. The resulting artworks are presented in this zine published by Kolaj Institute. "The project functions as 21st century folklore with each character potentially representing a magical creature or masked performer in some yet-to-be-imagined ritual," wrote Kolaj Institute Director Ric Kasini Kadour. "Like the odd, creature-like figures of early 20th century Surrealists, they, too, are a response to deeply troubled times and offer us the opportunity to find a collective effervescence to see us through them."

✂️Upcoming Residency: The Mayo Based Artist Residency at INTERFACE, The Hatchery, Cloonnacartan, Recess, Co. Galway, H91 VW58, ✂️

✂️⚡️Upcoming Residency: The Mayo Based Artist Residency at INTERFACE⚡️✂️
December 7th - 13th 2025,
At:
INTERFACE
The Hatchery,
Cloonnacartan,
Recess,
Co. Galway,
H91 VW58

I am delighted to have been accepted to onto the Mayo Based Artist Residency at Interface Inagh. I have always admired this organisations commitment to exploring the intersection between the arts and science. Interface is based out of a defunct Salmon Hatchery and embedded in the awe inspiring landscape of Inagh Valley. This feels like the perfect time and place to complete my Lexicon of Wonder project which itself combines visual art, poetry and research psychology to bring people back into a sense of awe and wonder at scientific investigation and the natural world.

For more about INTERFACE see below:
” Interface is a studio and residency programme for visual artists, dancers, writers and musicians, situated in the Inagh Valley, in the heart of Connemara. Our mission is to provide catalyzing opportunities for artists to develop work and engage with others through a unique platform that explores the intersections between scientific research and art.

The studio is located in premises shared with the Inagh Valley Trust, which drives a number of innovative scientific research projects in the Inagh Valley. Interface offers artists an opportunity to engage with a unique environment and to be inspired by the exciting research taking place in a spectacular landscape.

The facility was built as a salmon hatchery in the late 1980s. Scott Tallon Walker architects were commissioned by Carrolls cigarette company to design the biggest, most advanced salmon hatchery in the world. The facility was bought by the current owners in 2007 with a view to developing a centre of scientific research and development.”

With much thanks to AbbVie, as this opportunity was made possible through their Community Responsibility Committee in support of a Co.Mayo based artist.

✂️Upcoming Exhibition - Big Orange Monster: An Emergency Collage Exhibition at Kolaj Institute Gallery in New Orleans, 2372 Saint Claude Avenue, Suite 260,Louisiana, USA ✂️

August 31, 2025 Anthony D Kelly

✂️⚡️Upcoming Exhibition - Big Orange Monster: An Emergency Collage Exhibition⚡️✂️
Opening: Wednesday September 10th
Opening Reception: Second Saturday, September 13th 2025, 6-8PM (CDT)
Running until: Saturday, October 25th, 2025.

At:
The Kolaj Institute Gallery,
2372 Saint Claude Avenue, Suite 260,
New Orleans,
LA  70117,
USA.

If you follow my work then you know that I have a special interest in monsters, what they represent, how they can make us laugh, how they cause us fear, and what they can teach us about ourselves. So I am delighted to have dispatched some dastardly creatures to take part in this monstrous exhibition at the Kolaj Institute over the next two months.

Here is a little from the organizers:
“The world is run by monsters and you have to deal with them. Some of them run countries, some of them run banks, some of them run news corporations.” –Ken Livingstone

You mix fear (yellow) and anger (red) and you get a Big Orange Monster. What’s the emergency? There are a lot of Big Orange Monsters on the loose. Monsters only have power if you are afraid of them. So let’s create a space where we can slay our fear of Big Orange Monsters. Art helps us exorcise our demons. Monsters can be glorious and wonderful or horrible and evil. Let’s not cast aside the good Big Orange Monsters because some other Big Orange Monsters are well…unpleasant.
