I am delighted to be taking part in this upcoming exhibition at the beautiful San Francisco Public Library and its associated artists talk. Experience Mary Shelley's timeless masterpiece through the lens of contemporary collage artists. Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus is re-imagined in this exhibition, where literature and art converge to explore its enduring themes.

Free community collage tables will also be open to members of the public for the duration of April.

Artists interpret Shelley's novel in the context of today’s world, addressing:

⚡️Science and artificial intelligence: Echoing Shelley's cautionary tale, artists reflect on the ethical dilemmas of unchecked technological advancement.

⚡️Queerness and intersectional identities: The monster’s isolation becomes a metaphor for marginalization, offering a lens on contemporary social dynamics.

⚡️Narcissism and modern relationships: Victor Frankenstein’s self-absorption provides a framework for examining personal and societal disconnection.

This exhibition invites viewers to engage with Frankenstein in a new light, where past and present collide in striking visual form.

Roll Up! Roll Up!
Many great things happened this year, and one of the best was to begin collaborating on a children’s book with my dear friend Marta Janik. Drawing on our dual interests in illustration and circus culture we have delved into the unusual universe of Flea Circuses to develop a visually rich and vibrant world. The book is almost complete and some of our illustrations have won a place in an upcoming exhibition resulting from this years Clairvoyants children’s book competition. This competition is hosted bi-annually by the Dwie Siostry publishing house and our project was chosen as one of the most interesting projects out of 554 submissions!

Flea Circuses once existed throughout the world and actually involved trained fleas performing tricks! There was also a variant of these Circuses which utilized magnets and other mechanical devices to simulate the presence of performing fleas. These were known as “Humbug Shows”. Although the amount of Flea Circuses in existence today can be counted on one hand, they were strange and fascinating phenomenon with a history all of their own.

“Fleadom is a raucous, fun fueled journey through life at an extravagant Flea Circus. In this magical setting, fleas, animals and humans all collaborate as equals to perform wondrous and reality defying stunts. Under our little big top we learn that creatures and people don’t have to be big in size to be important or to do amazing things. 

Rich with tiny details, hidden meanings, and historical and cultural references, this is a book that invites parents and children to delve into its pages and explore its magical world again and again, each time finding some new and interesting details that elaborate on the colourful universe within. 

Small and unusual wonders do exist when we pay careful attention to the world around us. For example, I invite you to consider a flea learning to juggle on a unicycle, and then tell me you are not impressed.”

In the Autumn of 2023, I had the real pleasure of teaming up with a whole crew of creaturely collaborators to illustrate a new version of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. It was macabre delight to work with these monsters on dissecting Mary Shelly’s seminal work of proto-sciencefiction. It was an amazing process to spend time thinking about and drawing out the colourful, magical and fearful imagery within. I had a lot of fun working on the illustrations in this version with our ghastly group, including my dear friend and regular collaborator Marta Janik.

I am delighted to announce that the book is now ready for release!
