I am delighted to have been accepted to onto the Mayo Based Artist Residency at Interface Inagh. I have always admired this organisations commitment to exploring the intersection between the arts and science. Interface is based out of a defunct Salmon Hatchery and embedded in the awe inspiring landscape of Inagh Valley. This feels like the perfect time and place to complete my Lexicon of Wonder project which itself combines visual art, poetry and research psychology to bring people back into a sense of awe and wonder at scientific investigation and the natural world.

” Interface is a studio and residency programme for visual artists, dancers, writers and musicians, situated in the Inagh Valley, in the heart of Connemara. Our mission is to provide catalyzing opportunities for artists to develop work and engage with others through a unique platform that explores the intersections between scientific research and art.

The studio is located in premises shared with the Inagh Valley Trust, which drives a number of innovative scientific research projects in the Inagh Valley. Interface offers artists an opportunity to engage with a unique environment and to be inspired by the exciting research taking place in a spectacular landscape.

The facility was built as a salmon hatchery in the late 1980s. Scott Tallon Walker architects were commissioned by Carrolls cigarette company to design the biggest, most advanced salmon hatchery in the world. The facility was bought by the current owners in 2007 with a view to developing a centre of scientific research and development.”

If you follow my work then you know that I have a special interest in monsters, what they represent, how they can make us laugh, how they cause us fear, and what they can teach us about ourselves. So I am delighted to have dispatched some dastardly creatures to take part in this monstrous exhibition at the Kolaj Institute over the next two months.

Here is a little from the organizers:
“The world is run by monsters and you have to deal with them. Some of them run countries, some of them run banks, some of them run news corporations.” –Ken Livingstone

You mix fear (yellow) and anger (red) and you get a Big Orange Monster. What’s the emergency? There are a lot of Big Orange Monsters on the loose. Monsters only have power if you are afraid of them. So let’s create a space where we can slay our fear of Big Orange Monsters. Art helps us exorcise our demons. Monsters can be glorious and wonderful or horrible and evil. Let’s not cast aside the good Big Orange Monsters because some other Big Orange Monsters are well…unpleasant.

Earlier this year, I caught up with my dear friend and collaborator Marta Janik for an insightful interview about humanities place in nature, her sources of inspiration, and her current art practice. Marta is a Flea Circus Ringmaster, Skilled Animator and Collage Artist Extraordinaire based in Warsaw, Poland. I am really thrilled to launch this exhibition of my new body of work entitled The Lexicon of Wonder.
Inspired by the emotions of Wonder & Awe which are central pillars to my experience of the world.

Here is a little bit about the work:
”Wonder and Awe are complex emotions arising in response to experiences of profound beauty, connection, natural phenomena, or through bearing witness to the incredible capacities, courage or talents of other human beings. They can also arise at times of great personal crisis or fear such as witnessing the raw power of nature at a time of natural disaster.

Encountering reality through the states of Wonder and Awe can make an individual feel simultaneously small, and deeply connected to the world around them. They are emotions that inspire us to both transcend our own self interests and to delve deeply into our desire for greater understanding. They are in short the emotions of human discovery, and as such the unifying engines of the human curiosity behind philosophy, science and the arts.

For this exhibition I draw on the contemporary research of Psychologist Dacher Keltner and Philosopher Helen De Cruz into the importance of Wonder as a state of being. This new body of work is inspired by wonder, materials sourced from old children's scientific encyclopedias and contemporary collage techniques. Opening this Friday, I invite you to Áras Inis Glauire where you can experience these artworks that instill a viewer with sense of Wonder at the boundless curiosity of scientific investigation and humanities deep connection with the natural world.”

In addition to the aforementioned symposium, I am delighted to be hosting this roundtable discussion with the great Kirk Read and Erica Trabold.
This informal workshop is a space for those with a writing practice to connect with one another.

Author and collagist Kirk Read (Portland, Oregon, USA) will kick off the space with an exercise centered on visual and word practices. He wrote, “We will explore how these language and visual practices inform each other, how they compete and argue and agree in our minds and hands. Using generative writing experiments, we will create titles, move past stuck places and animate our personal writing. We will use fast collage paste-up to breathe life into our writing practice and quickly tap into the weird parts of our creative landscape.”

In the past year, Erica Trabold (Lynchburg, Virginia, USA) has been using prompts to take her practice to unexpected places. “One collage prompt even resulted in an entire series I wouldn’t have other wise made,” she wrote. “As a writing professor, I assign and use prompts constantly—but I had never explored them in the visual art space.” Trabold will share what she’s learned.

Anthony D Kelly (Castlebar, Co. Mayo, Ireland) often uses the cross activation of collage practices and literary mediums to spur on new moments of inspiration and to deepen the experience of both for an audience. He believes in both words and images as seeds which can give rise to each other and that by “changing channels” between these modes of expression we can nurture unexpected and exciting new works. Kelly will invite participants to consider this concept and lead a short playful visualization exercise along these lines to free up the imaginative process.

I am really honored to be presenting research and work on my upcoming Lexicon of Wonder project at Kolaj Fest 2025 as part of a symposium on Curiosity, Joy, Wonder and Portals alongside the amazing Breasia Hayes, Savannah Greene & C.Joi Sanchez.

I have been formulating the Lexicon of Wonder project over the last number of years and it is soon to be completed and released in the form of exhibitions and a publication. The first iteration of the Lexicon of Wonder exhibition will take place at Áras Inis Gluaire later this Summer with details coming soon.

”With its roots and history in the Surreal, collage is a well-built path to exercise curiosity. What happens if I put these two things together? Collage’s ability to bridge time and geography makes it a vehicle to explore new realms. During the Symposium at Kolaj Fest New Orleans, we will hear from Anthony D Kelly, Breasia Hayes, Savannah Green, and C. Joi Sanchez, each who are engaged in projects that explore wonder and joy and how life experiences take one down creative paths.

Anthony D Kelly is an artist, writer, and integrative psychotherapist from Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. “At the beating heart of my art practice are both wonder and play. Collage is a way for me to connect with myself, my community and the world around me,” wrote the artist. “I often hold a concept, word or idea in mind until an image coalesces and presents itself internally. I then sit and begin to sift through materials both digital and analogue for something that resonates.” Kelly will present his project, “Lexicon of Wonder”. He wrote, “Wonder and Awe are complex emotions arising in response to experiences of profound beauty, connection, natural phenomena, or through bearing witness to the incredible capacities, courage or talents of other human beings. They can also arise at times of great personal crisis or fear such as witnessing the raw power of nature at a time of natural disaster.” Kelly will speak about project origins, his ongoing research into the emotional states of wonder and awe, the role poetry plays in the project, and his plans for an exhibition and publication.”

COMPLEX PICTURES is an exhibition that brings digital work into the same space with displays of physical collage pieces and is an attempt to bring more recognition to artists who are invested in this area as a primary mode of practice.

At its most fundamental level, collage is a language of visual math, of addition to and subtraction from source material. In the book What Kind of Collage is That?, Katie Blake frames digital collage as “created partially or entirely with electronic means, such as software like Photoshop.” It’s not digital art in general, and it’s not simply a scan of a paper-and-glue collage. Artists were invited to expound on their collage methodologies, and the portable, location-independent aspect of working digitally was a consistent theme.

The 72 images accepted through the international open call represent styles of work ranging from narrative to surreal to abstract. Anthony D Kelly’s skill in integrating complex and visually rich material into strong compositions stands out, as does Diana Jahns’s use of layering with intelligent and poetic restraint. Jenny Lloyd gives us a maximalist approach with every element an asset to the overall whole. Nafisa Jabbarova draws upon a surrealist dream world with active, game-like scenes. Roberto Jackson Harrington introduces us to digital assemblage, presenting imaginative configurations of 3D objects and tableaus. Clive Knights’s work with physical transparency rather than software-facilitated layering expands the concept of digital collage. Eva Maria Reinhardt demonstrates the power of well-placed details such as a single, delicate line.

The exhibition will be shown on a dedicated screen at Collage-O-Rama (Slip Gallery, Seattle) as well as on the Special Agent Collage Collective website beginning on May 9.

World Collage Day is an annual, international celebration held on the second Saturday of May. Initiated by Kolaj Magazine, the day is a call for artists and venues around the world to celebrate collage — a medium that brings together disparate pieces to create something new. World Collage Day reminds us of the power of connection.
